Product Engineer (Remote - EMEA) at Zen Educate

Zen EducateNigeriaFull-Time(Remote)

About the Company

Zen Educate is on a mission to solve the crucial problem of getting the right teacher into the right school at the right time, improving education outcomes for children and the sustainability of an industry that spends billions. Our platform supports internal operations teams, educators via our mobile app, and schools for both short-term and long-term roles. We are well established in the UK and growing at a phenomenal rate in the US, having returned over £50 million to educators and classrooms since 2017.

Job Description

We are looking for engineers who can make an impact on the real-world problem of education staffing through engineering excellence. At Zen, this means:

  • Valuing real-world outcomes and shared learning over output
  • Product thinking over pure tech – starting with the problem, shipping quickly, and iterating
  • Team success and sustainability over individual heroics

We have 25 Product Engineers working in small dynamic teams. Every engineer has the opportunity to make an outsized impact and put their stamp on what excellence looks like in practice. We look for curiosity, adaptability, and proactiveness as fundamental traits.

Job Title: Product Engineer
Location: Remote - EMEA (UK timezone ±6 hrs generally)
Department: Product & Technology
Employment Type: Full Time / Remote
Salary: Location dependent. UK reference range is £75k to £110k. Candidates from other locations should map to equivalent market rate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Picking up an AI teacher qualification project with no clear owner, aligning with Product and Ops to clarify the problem and delivering iterative improvements
  • Overhauling permissions systems to be granular and scoped per school, network, and unit, with audit logging and admin UI
  • Creating foundational AI configuration for our monorepo to help engineers use AI more effectively
  • Implementing MixPanel events for crucial workflows to understand user interactions
  • Upgrading our React Native app to the latest Expo SDK
  • Improving anonymisation logic in internal tools and addressing vulnerabilities from monthly red-teaming

Required Skills

How We Work

  • Tech Stack: Ruby on Rails, React, React Native, running on Heroku + Cloudflare. We also evaluate new technologies like Amazon Personalise for matching and AI for bug triaging.
  • Mission-based setup: Teams form around outcomes, not org charts. You'll work across different parts of the business based on your strengths.
  • Engineers as problem shapers: You'll thrive if you want to shape problems, not just deliver tickets. Product Managers and Designers are partners.
  • Daily shipping culture: We ship regularly and are investing in starting smaller and iterating faster.

Growth & Progression

  • Choose your own career path – we care more about impact and learning than rigid competency grids
  • Your manager is a partner, not a supervisor – they help you think through problems and grow
  • Few titles, infinite levels – we use Levels to show growth instead of titles like Associate or Senior
  • Investment over reward mindset – level changes are coupled to compensation based on sustainably doing great work

Compensation

  • Based on your competitiveness in your local hiring market
  • Solid, but not flashy – we pay decently but won't beat out companies with deeper pockets yet
  • Think long-term investment

Team Culture & Collaboration

  • Distributed engineering team requiring solid communication skills and async habits
  • Strong connection without in-person engineering gatherings (though you can work from our offices)
  • We believe in impact, measurable outcomes, and shared learning
  • Balanced, sustainable work – long hours indicate something isn't working
  • We value direct, authentic communication

Hiring Process
Our ideal is: apply Monday, offer by Friday. The process includes:

  1. Recruiter quick chat – basics like compensation, benefits, availability
  2. Technical expertise – paired session where we share our screen and write code together
  3. Product thinking – chat with CPO or Product Manager about your product mindset
  4. Role chat – with CTO Martin and Senior Engineering Manager Sean

We're always open to great people and happy to chat even if timing isn't perfect. We currently need at least 4 more engineers in the team.
