Job Description

We are looking for a Market Expansion Manager to join our Business and Operations department as we scale up and drive digital and financial inclusion across our markets. This role involves owning M-KOPA's strategic market expansion and growth across Nigeria. You will lead new market entry from assessment through launch execution (50% of role) while simultaneously driving penetration and optimization in existing markets (40% of role). This is a hybrid, full-time role based in Lagos, reporting to the Head of Business Management. It requires 5+ years of experience in market expansion or business development with a proven track record across multiple Nigerian states.

Key Responsibilities

  • New Market Expansion (50%): Conduct rigorous assessment of which states represent genuine opportunity, build feasibility cases with real unit economics, create launch playbooks tailored to local dynamics, handle regulatory engagement, and manage on-the-ground setup including temporary hubs, partner relationships, and commercial infrastructure.
  • Market Development in Existing States (40%): Identify underserved segments, expand into new LGAs and rural regions, build partnerships with retail chains and telcos, track activation and repayment metrics to catch issues early, and turn competitor intelligence into strategic moves.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work across Sales, Operations, Finance, Logistics, and Marketing, owning the numbers including launch timelines, acquisition targets, portfolio health, channel expansion, and revenue growth.

Required Skills

  • Proven track record in market expansion, business development, or commercial operations in FMCG, Telco, fintech, or mobility — with demonstrable experience launching or scaling across multiple Nigerian states
  • Strong capability in market research and financial modelling, with experience building feasibility cases from scratch
  • Experience navigating regulatory and government stakeholder relationships
  • Entrepreneurial operating style — comfortable in ambiguous environments, willing to spend extended time in new markets, and able to solve problems resourcefully without waiting for infrastructure to be perfect
