Job Description

The Research Technician will support cassava field operations, collect and maintain research data, assist with laboratory and tissue culture activities, and ensure proper handling and quality control of research materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support cassava field operations, including establishment, crop maintenance, harvesting, post-harvest activities, and monitoring of field trials and breeding populations.
  • Collect, record, validate, and maintain agronomic, phenotypic, PPD, and other research data using approved digital tools while ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Assist in the handling, transportation, digital imaging, annotation, and quality control of cassava research materials between the field, laboratory, and screenhouse.
  • Support routine laboratory and tissue culture activities, including media preparation, sterilization, sample handling, multiplication, maintenance, and acclimatization of cassava cultures.
  • Ensure proper labeling, tracking, storage, cleanliness, safety, and organization of laboratory samples, workspaces, equipment, and consumables.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma in Crop Science, Agriculture, or a related field with a minimum of two (2) years' experience in supporting laboratory, field data collection, or research activities in a well-structured environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel, with the ability to use basic computer applications effectively.
  • Good organizational, record keeping, and data management skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in laboratory, screenhouse, and field environments, with strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience in agricultural or research-related projects and knowledge of data collection processes will be an added advantage.
