Job Description

The Trainee Deck Rating will understudy senior ratings in the deck department to progress into the rank of Ordinary Seaman after successfully completing requisite training in compliance with STWC 2010. Duties include safety and safe working practices, carrying out duties related to safety, navigation, operation, maintenance and security of the ship, Bridge lookout duties (360-degree lookout), reporting observations to the OOW, and carrying out lawful commands from senior officers.

Key Responsibilities

  • All ratings in departments have a duty to ensure the safety and safe working practices of both them and the personnel that they are working with.
  • They are under the control of the CPO / Bosun and carry out duties relating to the safety, navigation, operation, maintenance and security of the ship and all hold, tank, and ballast space cleaning.
  • Whilst undertaking Bridge lookout duties, the Rating must report the observation of all other vessels in visual range directly to the OOW. 
  • The Rating is required to move around the Bridge to maintain a 360-degree lookout in compliance with Rule 5 (Lookout) of the International Collision Regulations. 
  • The Rating should also occasionally confirm visual observations by Radar and check for any visually un-observed targets. A regular check astern of the vessel must be maintained however in Piracy areas, the frequency of these checks must be increased.
  • The Rating should bring any defects to the attention of the SMT and suggest remedial actions required to rectify the same.
  • He/she should be fully conversant with Permit to Work systems and the Daily Work Planning procedures.
  • In addition he/she must carry out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Chief Engineer, Master, Second Engineer, Chief Officer, Cargo/Gas Engineer or delegated OOW.

Required Skills

  • Be 18 years of age or above.
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) not earlier than 2008 with credits in Mathematics and English.
  • Possess International Passport, Seaman Discharge Book, STWC Mandatories (PSSR, PST, Firefighting and Prevention), and Yellow Fever Card.
