About the Company

The WTO Secretariat employs over 600 staff from around 80 WTO member countries. Staff roles include dispute settlement lawyers, legal officers, trade policy analysts and specialists, research economists and statisticians, who help to ensure that trade negotiations progress smoothly and that the rules of international trade are correctly implemented. Other roles include press officers, translators and interpreters, and professionals in finance, IT, and HR who support the mission of the WTO.

Job Description

The WTO Secretariat maintains three internship programmes for post-graduate students and recent graduates with an advanced university degree wishing to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system. Only a limited number of such internships is available. Internship selections are based on merit, eligibility criteria, academic qualifications, and expertise. Internships take place in Geneva, Switzerland, for a minimum of three months and up to a maximum of six months in total with no extension.

  • Job Location: Geneva, Switzerland (CWR)
  • Salary: Paid interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including weekends and official holidays). Interns recruited under the China's LDCs, Accessions and General Internship Programme receive a daily allowance of CHF 90.
  • Employment Type: Internship (3–6 months, full-time)
  • Benefits: Practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system; Swiss legitimation card type "H" (work and residence permit) may be issued

Required Skills

  • National of a WTO member state or a country or customs territory engaged in accession negotiations
  • Completed undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline
  • Must meet one of the following educational criteria:
    • Currently enrolled in a master's degree with at least one year completed
    • Completed a master's degree programme and enrolled in a higher-level postgraduate programme (including doctoral studies)
    • Completed a postgraduate degree (master's degree or PhD) within the past two years at the time of selection
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of the internship
  • For the China WTO Accessions Internship Programme and China General Internship Programme: no older than 30 years old at the time of the internship
